JAMES FERRARA: FROZEN FRONTIERS - UNDERWATER ENCOUNTERS IN ANTARCTICA

At a very young age, James’s family moved to South Florida. Living in coastal communities along the East Coast of Florida over the past 40 years, he has centered his life around the ocean. This has instilled a deep love for the marine world and its inhabitants. Prior to James’s photography journey, he spent much of his adolescence years fishing and diving. After high school, he attended Flagler College in St Augustine, where he received his bachelor’s degree in business. For the past seventeen years, James has been pursuing a career as a firefighter/paramedic for Martin County Fire Rescue.

As an avid diver, James began his photography journey with a Go Pro to document his underwater encounters. Eight years ago, he bought his first mirrorless camera with an underwater housing to obtain greater control of his photographic practice. As a self-taught photographer, James successfully honed his skills behind the lens to create vibrant and crisp images of underwater subjects. He believes he gets his eye for composition and creative passion from his mother, who is an accomplished artist. In recent years, his photos have been featured by National Geographic, BBC Earth, and Discovery. He has also received “Highly Commended” honors in some of the world’s most prestigious underwater photography competitions, including the Ocean Photography Awards and Underwater Photographer of the Year. He just recently won the Underwater Category of the Nature Photo Contest.

James also just returned from a month-long trip to Antarctica focusing on underwater photography of leopard seals, penguins, humpback whales, and icebergs. James plans on continuing to pursue his passion for creating art that people can enjoy for years to come.
