MEMBERS IN THE NEWS:

RICHARD COLLINS AND LINDA IANNIELLO
were featured in an article in the Miami Herald, about Rich’s work surveying Hydromedusae in our area and a newly-described species, Zancleopsis grandis. Included are images from both Rich and Linda.

RICHARD COLLINS AND ANDREA WHITAKER
are featured in an article in the May 3 edition of the Miami Herald, “Glowing sea creature with 15 tentacles found off Florida coast. It’s a new species.” The new species is the Hydromedusa Melicertum tropicalis featured in Andrea’s images

SUZAN MELDONIAN
was published in National Geographic, China, in Sept 2023 with a flying Mobula ray in “Winged Marine Life.” She was also published in the April 2024 issue of Alert Diver, “Speak of the Spiny Devilfish” p.52-53.

RICHARD COLLINS
is a co-author of an article titled “Additional observations on hydromedusae during night dives in the Gulf Stream” which was published in the Swiss Journal of Zoology and online in BioOne. Between this and a previous study, SFUPS members have helped identify and describe a total of eight new species. Photographing and sampling was mainly done by Rich, with SFUPS members Andrea Whitaker, Deb Devers and Linda Ianniello contributing specimens and images for this massive work.

KAREN EDWARDS
tied for second place in the Art House Flicks category of the 2024 Houston Underwater Film Festival with her short video, “Aquapella.”

STEVE KOVACS
has an image of a female blanket octopus that was used by National Geographic in a book, “Secrets of the Octopus.” the companion to the National Geographic television special. It was also used in the promo for the book on their website, and on National Geographic Magazine’s site.

JOSH SCHELLENBERG
has an article in the latest Dive Photo Guide’s Dome Report, entitled “A (Smelly) Whale Tale.”
