Matty Smith is an acclaimed underwater photographer originally from the United Kingdom and now based in Newcastle, NSW, Australia. Since relocating in 2007 to pursue his photographic career, Matty has developed a deep connection with the Pacific Ocean, which continues to inspire his distinctive body of work.
A proud ambassador for Nikon Australia and Aquatica Digital Water Housings, Matty has earned international recognition for his photography. His award-winning images have been exhibited in numerous venues worldwide, including the Natural History Museum in London, the Louvre, Paris and the Australian Museum in Sydney. Beyond his visual work, he regularly presents on his creative process, contributes to leading dive and nature publications, and conducts specialised underwater photography workshops. He also runs his own travel photography company “Wild Planet Expeditions”
Matty’s imagery has been featured extensively across major media platforms and productions, including BBC’s Blue Planet II, National Geographic, Ocean Geographic, BBC Wildlife Magazine, GEO, The Washington Post, The Australian, and The Guardian. His work has also appeared on The Discovery Channel, Channel 9, and Channel 7 in Australia.
To date, Matty has received over 30 international photography honours, highlighted by his 2024 Wildlife Photographer of the Year category win at the Natural History Museum in London, one of the highest distinctions in wildlife photography.
