My name is Mike Johnson, and I’m absolutely obsessed with taking my video career underwater!
I’ve been working in video production since high school, going straight into full time work immediately after college graduation in 2008. Since then, I have shot, edited, and more recently produced a number of nationally broadcast television series, mainly within the hunting and fishing industries. Ever since I was a kid I wanted to dive, but growing up in the suburbs of St. Louis, MO didn’t seem the ideal place to dive. Both my parents dove extensively in Okinawa, Japan while my dad was stationed there in the Marine Corps before I was born. I grew up hearing their stories and dreaming of diving. It wasn’t until the summer of 2014 that I finally had my first opportunity to dive. A small production I was working for sent me to the Bahamas for a shoot and I was able to tag along on a Discover Scuba dive they did for the show. Needless to say, that was it, I got hooked!
What started as a childhood dream has now become an obsession. In the fall of 2014 I came up with an idea while on a terrestrial shoot to create a scuba themed web series titled Sunken Treasure. It has been a lot of work and a serious learning process, but continues to inspire me. Now, building on my experience in broadcast television, I am working to evolve this web series into a nationally broadcast TV show. At the same time, I’m currently working to finish my PADI Divemaster certification, and plan to move straight into IDC once that’s complete.
My career in the underwater realm is just beginning, but I’m eager to learn more and gain experience both diving and shooting underwater. At present, my underwater video kit isn’t much to speak of. A GoPro Hero4 Black and two Light & Motion Sola 2000 video lights. I’m currently in the process of researching housing options for my Sony FS7.
