ASHOK MENON

I am a California native but spent most of my career working overseas. I first started to dive on a work assignment in Mozambique and was certified in 2000 in the crystal-clear warm waters of Pemba, Mozambique, an amazing place to dive. I loved it so much I continued getting my advanced certification in Tofo, Mozambique, known for giant mantas and whale sharks. I ended up living for 16 years in Mozambique, enjoying its underwater marvels – some places we’ve dubbed the “Lembeh of Africa.”

I’ve only been taking underwater photographs since 2018 when a friend turned me onto photographs. I ended up buying his kit with the promise that he’d teach me how to use it – and that he did. We went on to write a book together called Diving Ponta: A Dive and Photo Guide of one of the premier dive spots in Mozambique, Ponta do Ouro. We’ve also done virtual exhibitions to raise awareness of marine conservation efforts in Mozambique, which has helped advance marine conservation efforts in Mozambique.

The underwater photography bug bit me, and I’ve continued to challenge myself and learn to take underwater photography, diving as much as I can, including Indonesia (Komodo, Bali, Raja, Lembeh), Egypt, Philippines, Mexico, Caribbean and of course the US (California and Florida) and logging over 1,000 dives.

I’m currently using a Sony A7riii in a Nauticam housing and Retra Pro strobes.

Looking forward to meeting new folks here at SFUPS, learning about underwater photography and hearing about new dive experiences.
