LAWRENCE WATKINS

My name is Lawrence G Watkins V, and I am an underwater photographer based in sunny South Florida. For many years I lived in Colorado. There I was surrounded by the beautiful Rocky Mountains, which never failed to inspire me to get outside. I hadn’t picked up a camera since high school and hadn’t felt the need to until I started traveling.

In 2018 I got offered a job in Hawaii, where I overcame my fear of the water, learned to Scuba Dive, bought my first DSLR, and kicked off my travels. I first started shooting landscape photography. This is where my photographic journey began. I intended to create beautiful images that I could one day decorate my home with. Little did I know I would fall in love with the ocean and the enchanting underwater world.

Although I never took this DSLR below the surface, I sure learned the ins and out of operating it. Sure I missed some incredible photo opportunities as I pursued the professional side of diving, traveling to Indonesia and Australia where I became a PADI Divemaster. Places I know I MUST return to. In the meantime, I used a Gopro to show friends and family what I was seeing below the surface. I knew I wanted to get into underwater photography but first, I had to make sure my diving skills were second nature. I didn’t want to have to think about how to operate a camera, while also struggling with my buoyancy. Two years later, the stars aligned. I had the camera I wanted and the funds to get my first underwater housing and lighting setup. Thanks, Ikelite!

Here in South Florida, we have an incredible dive site right in our backyard, the Blue Heron Bridge. This has been my proving ground and where I’ve learned everything I know about underwater photography. The wide selection of subjects never disappoints. A bad day at the bridge is still a spectacular day underwater. I enjoy the diverse critters we get to see under the bridge, from Spotted Eagle Rays, Striated Frogfish, Seahorses, and multiple different species of nudibranchs just to name a few.
