RICHARD COLLINS

My interest in natural history, photography and the oceans started young while growing up in Michigan. The post war age of exploration was underway. Jacques Cousteau, NASA and many others were exploring new frontiers and I was fascinated. I attended Maine Maritime Academy and studied nautical science and oceanography. I had my first career as a ship’s officer and traveled the world, but never learned to dive. After a second career in business, I began to engage again with my interests in science, photography and conservation. Plus, I finally learned how to dive.

I have been diving for three years and I have had a camera in hand the entire time, mostly using an Ikelite housing and DS 161 strobes with a Nikon d700. I am currently using a Nikon d800 and a Nauticam housing. I never leave home without my GoPro. I am currently thinking about how to use my work encourage saving what is left of our natural heritage, especially here in Florida.

Thank you to all my SFUPS friends for your help, encouragement and inspiration.
