STEVE HARMS

My relationship with the ocean began at an early age. My Dad was an exploration geologist and I spent my early years traveling the planet. Born in Costa Rica, at age 10 I found myself and my family in Trinidad and Tobago. It was a wonderland for a young boy with rivers, beaches, and the ocean as my backyard. My Dad got me certified to scuba dive when I was 13, and my love of all things oceanic – both above and below the water – began then and has never diminished.
Since then, I have been fortunate enough to travel the world in search of new photo subjects and adventures. The community of divers is a close-knit one, and I am blessed to be part of a large community of photographers, videographers, and scuba enthusiasts.
I started taking underwater photographs in 2004 and have studied under some of the best in the business over the years. It is a passion that I’m grateful to share with so many talented individuals. My work has been featured in publications, contests and photo reviews and while the recognition is great, the desire to continually learn more about this craft is what drives me.
It is also a form of activism for me. By sharing the marvelous diversity of life underwater, it is my hope that I can increase awareness of just how fragile and threatened our oceans are. In recent years, many of the world’s most pristine ocean environments have been destroyed. Those that remain are highly threatened. But there is still hope for recovery. It is my hope that by sharing the wonder and beauty of the world beneath the waves, I can in some way inspire the kind of love and compassion for the ocean that is so desperately needed.
